Proceeds from S.C. Port Book—and Challenge Funds—to Aid Water Missions

Charleston, SC — Author Shelia Watson is donating proceeds from her book, South Carolina Ports: Charleston, Georgetown, and Port Royal (Arcadia Publishing), to Water Missions International (WMI) and is challenging companies in the port community to match her pledge.

Watson considers WMI an important shipper in the port community. “WMI’s product—a portable water treatment unit—is more altruistic than most items moving through the port. There are two photos in the book—one of a unit being loaded into a container and the other of a unit after arrival in Afghanistan—that are examples of the wide variety of goods moving through the port. It’s fitting that sales from a book on the port will help continue such an important mission.”

Watson is sending all royalties she receives to the nonprofit organization. Among the companies answering Watson’s challenge so far are Charleston Marine Containers, Inc., (CMCI) and Zoom Logistics. Both companies have promised to donate $1 for every book sold.

“We were looking for a way we could help after the devastation caused by the tsunami,” says Herb Ellis, president of CMCI. “We’re pleased to help Water Missions with a pledge in conjunction with sales of the book.”

“Water Missions is a great organization,” says Russell Barrett, president of Zoom Logistics. “And the work they’re doing is incredible. We’re proud to meet this challenge.”

Watson says that although WMI has been in the spotlight lately because of the help provided to tsunami victims, the organization has been providing clean drinking water around the world for years. “I’m hoping my contribution—and the matching funds—will help WMI continue its mission for many years.”
